Preparing For The Winter Blues

As I’m writing this, the rain is hitting my windows and the clouds are dark and gloomy. I slept in today because my apartment was so dark that I thought it must have been about 6 am. Nope, it was 10 am. I remember just a month ago, I was on my porch sweating up a storm telling my mom that I was so over summer. I was complaining that it was too hot and I couldn’t wait for it to cool down. I am happy that it’s not as hot but I think reality has set in. Here in Washington, the rain is here and it’s here to stay for months on end. No matter how many times I’ve looked forward to this moment, I forgot about the winter blues that always eventually kicks in. Last year was really rough for me. I let seasonal depression take me captive until spring arrived. This year, I want to be more prepared. So I thought, what could I do to chase the winter blues away?

Get Cozy

A couple of things that I love during the cold and dark months are candles, fluffy blankets, fuzzy socks, and buying some cute home decor. Lighting some candles and hanging up some string lights is just so relaxing to me. We find ourselves indoors most of the time when it’s rainy and cold outside so I think it’s important to make your indoor environment as relaxing and cozy as possible.

Stay Active

If you are able to, get outside and go for a walk. Take advantage of the days that the sun is out, just bundle up if its cold out. This will help boost your immune system and you’ll be getting your natural sunlight. If you are unable to get outside to workout, either join a local gym or workout inside your home. No matter the weather, don’t make excuses not to stay active.

Goals & Planning

A couple of things that I love most right now is making goals and planning out my day. It helps you look forward to the day and keep busy. I know for me, during the winter months, it’s so easy to just settle in on the couch and fall into the habit of not being productive. This is a trap for boredom and depression. Make sure you’re being productive each day!

Make Healthy Choices

I’m a person that tends to get sick a lot during winter but that can be prevented. Make sure you’re drinking lots of water every day, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep at night. Pinterest is my favorite place to look up yummy healthy recipes.

Vitamin D

Did you know that most people are Vitamin D deficient? Our main source of Vitamin D is from the sunshine. Vitamin D helps keep our bones strong, teeth healthy and helps us from getting sick.  But if during the winter months, we’re hardly seeing or getting enough sun, chances are we’re not getting enough of this important vitamin. You can buy Vitamin D3 supplements at the store to make sure you’re getting a good source of Vitamin D every day.

  2. Great post! I found it very hard to motivate myself to stay active this time of year which is something I’m trying to improve on. I get as much Vitamin D as possible whenever we had a lovely Autumn day. I enjoy going for a walk.
